Performance page: Viewing overall class progress
To assign a Guided Draft, click here!
When you click the "View Writing" icon from your Assignments page, you can see which of your students have submitted drafts, are still writing, and haven't started.
At the top of the page, under "Ready for grading," you will see students who have submitted drafts and are ready to grade. Under "Still working," you will see students who have begun writing ("Writing in progress") and students who have not yet started the assignment at all ("Assignment not yet started").
Individual student submissions
Viewing students’ drafts
- To see a particular student's writing, click the student's name (or the "Grade" button for any students with submitted drafts) from the class progress page.
- You can see a student's most recently saved writing from this page, so you can monitor students' progress as they work on their drafts:
Giving feedback on students’ drafts
On this same page, once the student has submitted his or her draft, you can choose to either post a grade or return the draft back to the student for revision (essentially “unsubmitting” the student’s writing).
You can choose to give a rubric score, overall grade, and/or inline or general comments on a student’s draft:
- Rubric score: You can assign a score along the grading rubric, which is identical to the rubric students see when writing. At this time, you cannot edit the grading rubric after you have created the assignment.
- Overall grade: Based on your rubric scores, we calculate an overall percentage grade (and the corresponding points, based on the total point value of the assignment you chose when creating the Guided Draft). You can manually override and assign a different overall grade by clicking the pencil icon. (However, if you change any rubric item scores, it will recalculate the overall grade percentage.)
- Specific comments: You can highlight the student's writing and leave feedback directly on the highlighted portion.
- General comments: You can leave additional comments to share qualitative feedback on the overall draft by clicking "Add additional comments" below the rubric.
Once you’ve given qualitative or quantitative feedback, you can choose to either:
- Post grade and comments, which essentially “closes” the assignment for the student. Students will not be able continue working on their Guided Draft. Grades will be visible to students via their Results page and reflected in your gradebook and student data.
- Send back for revisions, which “unsubmits” the draft and reopens the assignment for the student. Students will see any rubric score and/or comments you provided, and will be able to revise their writing.
Can I change my mind?
- If you’ve posted a grade for a student’s writing and change your mind, you can reopen the student’s assignment by clicking “Edit grade/request revisions.” From there, you can instead select the “Send back for revisions” option before clicking “Return to student.”
- However, you will not be able to reverse your decision to reopen a student’s assignment. If you choose to send a student’s draft back for revision and change your mind, you will have to ask the student directly to submit their writing again to post a grade.
Tell me more about how to return a student’s Guided Draft
- Only teachers can request a Guided Draft revision. Students cannot withdraw their own Guided Draft submission
- You do not need to give any feedback to return a draft to a student. If a student accidentally submits a draft, you can simply choose “Send back for revisions” and “Return to student” without filling out any rubric scores or comments.
- Students revising a Guided Draft that has been returned to them are subject to the original due date and late submission policy. If your Guided Draft assignment does not accept late work, students will be locked out of their assignment when the due date passes. Otherwise, students can edit/revise their writing until they submit their drafts.
- Currently, students are unable to respond to feedback left on their assignment. They will, however, see all specific and general feedback as they revise.
Reviewing version history
After students have submitted a revision of their Guided Draft, you'll be able to view each version of their essay from their individual results page. This makes it easy to track changes across drafts during multiple rounds of revision.
While viewing a student's submission, you can toggle between versions by clicking the dropdown menu in the top left corner of the screen. You will be able to view previous grades and comments associated with that version.
Once you've finished reviewing student work, you can choose to post a grade or request an additional revision. If you request another revision, you'll continue to see student draft versions listed in the dropdown shown above.
