Now that you've assigned a Guided Short Response, let's take a look at what students experience while completing the assignment!
What do students see on a Guided Short Response?
π‘ Before starting on a Short Response assignment, we recommend that students complete pre-writing so that they have an idea of what they want to write.
When starting a Guided Short Response, students will complete an interactive tutorial for the type of paragraph they're working on. They will only automatically see the tutorial the first time they write a certain type of paragraph, but they can access this tutorial again at any time from the header.
Students will see the assigned prompt and sources to the left of the writing area. They can switch between this view and the rubric by selecting the tabs in the sidebar. They'll also be able to highlight and annotate the source provided to help them keep track of their thoughts as they write.
Students will write their paragraph one sentence at a time. Each sentence is color-coded. Students of all grade levels will be given instructions and support that are specific to that part of the paragraph. This includes sentence frames, examples, and tips. Students can cycle through these by selecting the arrows.
π‘ For Grades 3-5, a whimsical animal character will guide students through each sentence. For Grades 6 and up, this support will be given without the characters.
As students work on the assignment, a progress bar will also be visible at the top of their screen. This bar will move as each sentence is completed, marking a milestone in the student's progress.
If you've added a source to your writing assignment, students will now also be able to annotate in both side-by-side and full-screen mode by selecting and dragging their cursor over text within the source. They can change the highlight color, add a note, and more!
