Best practices and tips
-
Plan out scope and sequence:
- You can use the Standards & Tests page to map NoRedInk content to an existing scope and sequence you're using
- Or, use the Standards & Tests page to plan your own curriculum for the year. You can use a Unit Diagnostic to identify which topics to focus on.
- Build Units focused on specific standards: Grouping topics together into Units is a great way to measure student growth within certain standards. While browsing standards, you can create a Unit Diagnostic by clicking the checkboxes for the topics you'd like to include. After students complete a Unit Diagnostic, you can assign Practice on any topics where students may be struggling, and later follow up with a Growth Quiz, which provides valuable data on how students have grown in the skills included in your Unit. Choosing content for different instructional scenarios
The variety of activities available on NoRedInk can fill many different needs. Here are a few ideas for how to utilize different assignment types in various scenarios:
- Bell-ringers or skill review: Quick Writes or individual Practice topics are great for helping students brush up on a skill
- Helping students improve their proficiency: If your students are struggling in a certain area, you can help reinforce their understanding of these skills by creating a Practice comprised of multiple topics. Including a Checkpoint topic allows students to combine skills in a more authentic, challenging setting.
- Building skills in-context: A Passage or skill-based Quick Write prompt allow students to apply their learning within the context of a longer work or in their own writing.
- Formal essay writing: Guided Essays support students with scaffolded tips as they write and allow for multiple rounds of teacher-supported revision.
- Pre-teach with lessons and tutorials: After filtering for content, you can use our lessons and tutorials to pre-teach concepts to students before assigning them practice, as well as model example questions for the class. Lean more here.
