Overview
Each summer, classes are archived to get your account ready for the new school year. We also reset student mastery levels before each school year so that students and teachers can begin with a clean slate.
We typically archive classes and reset mastery on the last Saturday of July each year, but we will always announce the exact date in this article, in an email announcement, and on your NoRedInk dashboard.
Summer 2023 schedule
Dates for automatic class archiving
- Classes will be automatically archived at the end of the day on July 29, 2023 unless you opt-out* for all or some of your classes.
- Classes created after June 16, 2023 will not be automatically archived on July 29. This is to accommodate those teaching over the summer or getting a head start for the new school year.
*Opting out of automatic archiving means that your classes will stay active, just as you see them now. You can choose to manually archive courses later.
Dates for resetting student mastery
- Student mastery scores will also reset to 0 on July 29, 2023.
- This will not affect students’ scores on assignments. All the grades shown on the "Student Data" page (gradebook) will remain as long as the student stays enrolled in the active NoRedInk class.

Why does NoRedInk automatically archive classes and reset mastery?
Archiving classes ensures that you don't have a cluttered dashboard and that your experience using the site runs smoothly. Your data is not deleted, and you can always unarchive your classes at any time.
We reset student mastery levels before each school year so that students and teachers can begin with a clean slate. Students will have a fresh start on all NoRedInk topics, even ones they’ve previously practiced or mastered. Teachers will have access to student mastery data from previous years.
How do I opt-out of automatically archiving my classes?
- To opt-out of automatic archiving for all of your classes, refer to the alert on your NoRedInk homepage. The alert will show your automatic archive date, and your classes will be labeled with the automatic archive date as a reminder.
2. If you prefer to opt out for only some of your classes, click "Manage Classes" in the top right corner of your page.
3. Select the class you would like to prevent from being automatically archived, then uncheck the box for automatic archiving.
How do I restore my archived class?
If you forget to opt out of automatically archiving the class, you can always unarchive the class. Here's how:
1. Click "Manage Classes" in the top right corner for your screen
2. Click "Archived classes"
3. To unarchive your course, select "Unarchive class"
Mastery reset does not affect writing submissions or assignment scores. However, before archiving classes or removing students, be sure to save writing or scores you or your students want to keep as the data will not follow students into their new classes.
Here are some tips for saving writing and gradebook data:
- Students can go to their Past Work page to view their writing submissions and print directly from their browser. Alternatively, they can use the “copy” essay button to copy and paste the writing into another document. Teachers can follow the same steps from the writing assignment’s results page.
- Teachers can download the “Grades” tab of the Student Data page to save a copy of students' scores. You can also print or download a copy of individual student reports.
How can teachers and students review mastery data from the previous year?
Teachers
Teachers can assign any NoRedInk content to students without worrying about whether students have mastered it in previous years. Teachers can also see student Mastery data from the previous year for any particular Pathway or Topic. Here’s how:
- Click on “Student Data” in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.
- Click on the “Mastery” tab.
- Click on the Pathway for which you would like to see data from the previous year.
- Click on “View Last Year’s Data” in the upper right.

Students
Students will be able to see which topics they’ve mastered during the previous school year by following these steps:
- Click "Learn" at the top of the screen
- Select one of the Pathways
All previously mastered Topics will have a green star next to them. Students will still need to master that content again if it is assigned by a teacher this year.
