What are Passage Quizzes?
Passage Quizzes allow students to practice their skills in the context of a high-interest, multi-paragraph passage. Each quiz prompts students to evaluate and correct a 3-5 paragraph text. There are two types of passages:
- Passage Quizzes, which review a specific set of skills (such as verb tense)
- this article for more details) ACT® and SAT® Mixed Skill Review Passages, which include a variety of highly-tested language skills in one assignment (see

Remediation in Passage Quizzes
After correcting the passage, students instantly see which answers they missed and are given a lesson and similar questions until they answer one correctly. This will help students clear up misconceptions, even without you in the room with them.
Leveraging Passage Quizzes for distance learning
Our Passage Quizzes are well suited for distance learning because they hook students with engaging content and help them improve their conventions skills independently. Here are some specific ways to leverage these passages:
- Assign a passage as review following a practice assignment. A Passage Quiz works well as a culminating assignment after students complete a related practice exercise. If you want the passage to follow a practice assignment, make the start date of the passage begin after the practice due date.
- Or, assign a passage on its own. Passages can also provide an authentic context for students to practice skills they have already learned. The first time you assign a Passage Quiz, let students know what the assignment is over email or your LMS.
- Use the highly engaging passages as a starting point for additional assignments. With subjects ranging from from "Taylor Swift: Fan Favorite" to "Boston's Great Molasses Flood," our passages cover interesting nonfiction topics and could spark interesting ideas for students. Try asking students to react or think further about the passage's topic in a follow-up Quick Write, or consider prompting students to conduct additional research on the subject.
- Assign ACT or SAT mixed skill review passages as general cumulative grammar review, not just test prep. While these passages assess the skills most commonly assessed on the SAT and ACT, they are useful for all high school students because they provide a mixed review of a variety of skills, such as punctuation and parallelism. Learn more about ACT and SAT mixed skill passages in this article.
- Use passages 1-3 times a week to give students variety in the work they're doing. There are dozens of engaging passages, so consider assigning a couple per week! The passages are not just an opportunity for students to practice grammar skills; they're also a way to make sure students stay engaged in reading while learning from home.
