Now that you've assigned an Essay Guided Draft, let's take a look at what students experience while completing the assignment!
💡 Before starting on Guided Drafts, we recommend that students complete pre-writing so that they have an idea of what they want to write.
What do students see on a Essay Guided Draft?
When starting a Essay Guided Draft assignment, students will be introduced to the prompt and shown the essay rubric that they will review. If a student has not yet completed the interactive tutorial for the essay genre they are working on, this tutorial will automatically start before they read through the rubric.Â
The left panel offers scaffolding features that support students in the following ways:
- Students will see targeted tips and examples as they work on specific essay components.
- Students will also see the essay rubric criteria.
Students will draft their essay on the right panel and can start working on the sections in any order they choose.
If you've added a source to your writing assignment, students will now also be able to annotate in both side by side and full-screen mode by selecting and dragging their cursor over text within the source. They can change the highlight color, add a note, and more!Â
You can read this article to learn more about what your students see when you add a source.
Completing the assignment
While students work on the assignment, their writing is saved automatically every 30 seconds. Students can also select Save & exit at the top of the page to manually save their writing. After all the sentences have been written, students will review their paragraph. Students will then select Submit my writing once they are ready to turn in their work.
In order to submit their writing for grading, students must complete each required essay component. Once students have completed their draft, they will select the Submit Writing button to send the draft to their teacher.
Revising their draft
If the Essay Guided Draft was sent back by the teacher for revision, the assignment will reappear on the student’s homepage. Students will open the assignment and make adjustments based on their teacher’s feedback.
Once they have completed their revisions, they will submit their work again for feedback.
Reviewing their submitted workÂ
To view the writing they've submitted, students can select Past Work at the top of their page.
By selecting View Writing next to the Guided Draft, students will be able to see their submitted work, any comments their teacher left, and their grade.
