From August 2023 to January 2024, we made continued updates to improve NoRedInk's compatibility with assistive technology and standard adaptive strategies used by students with disabilities, following WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines for creating accessible web content and taking into consideration user feedback. During this time, NoRedInk also released new features and content for students.
These updates have been reviewed by a third-party accessibility firm who have prepared our new Accessibility Conformance Report/VPAT, which can be found at https://www.noredink.com/accessibility.
- Fixes and improvements from August 2023 to January 2024 are categorized by:
- Major improvements to the announcement and perceivability of status messages, error messages, and dynamically updating content across the site, with support for students to review grammar, spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and formatting of announcements via our new Announcement History feature.
- More user interface components are accessible to assistive technology.
- Additional images have text alternatives.
- Almost all pages have descriptive titles.
- Header navigation is more consistent.
- More inputs have understandable and/or visible labels.
- Some looping animations have been made shorter.
- HTML parsing errors are no longer considered by WCAG to be problems due to browsers ability to automatically correct these.
- New accessibility barriers for some users from August 2023 to January 2024 include:
- Some tooltips cannot be dismissed without moving focus or pointer device away from the trigger, so some users may be blocked from seeing content behind the tooltip.
- Emojis are used in some content without an author-defined text alternative, so their meaning (default emoji name) may not be clear to all users.
- Some text in Grades 3–5 content is lightened to very low levels of contrast on the screen, meaning that some users will be unable to read the lightened text, though other users will be able to read it.
